An hour from Seoul's cafes lies a 4-km-wide strip where the Korean War never officially ended.
About an hour northwest of Seoul, in Paju, everyday Korea gives way to something found nowhere else on Earth: the Demilitarized Zone, a buffer roughly 4 km wide and about 248 km long that separates North and South Korea.
It exists because the Korean War (1950-1953) ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty — technically, the war never officially ended. The armistice line of July 1953 froze the front where it stood, and both sides pulled back 2 km to create the DMZ. Despite its name, the areas around it are heavily guarded. In 1978, South Korea discovered the Third Infiltration Tunnel here, a 1,635-meter passage dug under the border, which visitors can now walk partway into.
Yet the DMZ is not only about tension. Left almost untouched by humans for seven decades, it has become an accidental sanctuary for endangered wildlife, including rare cranes that winter in the borderlands. At Imjingak Park, families separated by the division have gathered for generations to look north; ribbons of hope cover the fences.
Visiting is straightforward and safe: Imjingak is open to anyone, while the Third Tunnel and Dora Observatory require a passport and a tour. It is one of the most sobering, clarifying day trips you can take in Korea.
서울에서 북서쪽으로 한 시간쯤 떨어진 파주에는, 지구상 어디에도 없는 풍경이 일상 너머에 펼쳐진다. 남과 북을 가르는 폭 약 4km, 길이 약 248km의 완충지대 — 비무장지대(DMZ)다.
DMZ가 존재하는 이유는 한국전쟁(1950~1953)이 평화협정이 아닌 정전협정으로 멈췄기 때문이다. 엄밀히 말해 전쟁은 아직 공식적으로 끝나지 않았다. 1953년 7월의 정전선은 전선을 그대로 얼렸고, 양측이 각각 2km씩 물러나 DMZ가 만들어졌다. '비무장'이라는 이름과 달리 주변은 삼엄하게 경비된다. 1978년에는 이곳에서 국경 아래로 파 내려온 길이 1,635m의 제3땅굴이 발견됐고, 지금은 방문객이 일부 구간을 직접 걸어 들어가 볼 수 있다.
그러나 DMZ가 긴장만의 공간은 아니다. 70년 가까이 사람의 손이 닿지 않으면서 이곳은 멸종위기 야생동물의 뜻밖의 피난처가 됐다. 겨울이면 희귀한 두루미들이 접경지대를 찾는다. 임진각에는 분단으로 헤어진 가족들이 북녘을 바라보러 대대로 모여들었고, 철조망에는 소망을 적은 리본이 가득하다.
방문은 어렵지 않고 안전하다. 임진각은 누구나 자유롭게 갈 수 있고, 제3땅굴과 도라전망대는 여권과 투어가 필요하다. 한국에서 할 수 있는 가장 묵직하고, 많은 것을 이해하게 되는 당일 여행이다.

Getting there.가는 법. Easiest: a half-day or full-day DMZ tour bus from central Seoul (hotel or station pickup, ~1h to Paju). Independent option: take the Gyeongui-Jungang Line toward Munsan and connect onward to the Imjingang Station area for Imjingak Park only — services on this last stretch are limited, so check schedules in advance. Sites beyond the checkpoint require a registered tour vehicle.
Tips.팁. Bring your passport — it is checked at the military checkpoint and tours will turn you away without it. Book tours a few days ahead; itineraries can change or cancel at short notice depending on the security situation, and JSA/Panmunjom access has been suspended for long stretches since 2023, so don't build your trip around it. Follow photography rules — some zones prohibit photos and guides will tell you where. Dress and behave respectfully; this is an active military area and, for many Koreans, a place of family separation.
Best time.가기 좋은 때. Clear days in autumn and winter give the best visibility into the North from Dora Observatory; winter (December-February) is also crane-watching season in the borderlands.
