The DMZ and PanmunjomDMZ

The world's most heavily guarded border is an hour from Seoul — and you can stand at its edge.

The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is a buffer strip about 250 kilometers long and 4 kilometers wide that cuts across the Korean Peninsula. It was created by the 1953 Armistice Agreement that paused the Korean War: each side pulled its forces back two kilometers from the Military Demarcation Line, the actual border running down the middle. Because the war ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty, the two Koreas remain technically at war — which is why this line still matters so much today. Panmunjom, the 'truce village' where the armistice was signed, sits on that line, and its Joint Security Area (JSA) is the only place where soldiers from both sides stand face to face. Paradoxically, seven decades without farms or cities have turned the DMZ into an accidental wildlife refuge. Today, visiting the Paju section is one of Korea's most sobering day trips: you can peer into North Korea from an observatory, walk down an infiltration tunnel discovered in 1978, and see families' ribbons of longing tied to fences at Imjingak. It is not a theme park — it is a living, unresolved chapter of history, and Koreans visit it with that weight in mind.

If you go가신다면

Getting there. Imjingak is the only part you can reach on your own: take the Gyeongui-Jungang Line from Seoul to Munsan, then a short train or taxi to Imjingang Station (about 1.5 h total). Everything beyond the Civilian Control Line — Third Tunnel, Dora Observatory — requires a licensed half-day tour from Seoul (most depart near Hongik Univ. or City Hall) or the official shuttle from Imjingak.

Tips. Bring your physical passport — it is checked at the military checkpoint and no passport means no entry, no refund. Book tours a few days ahead; many DMZ facilities close on Mondays. Follow photography restrictions exactly where signs or soldiers indicate. JSA (Panmunjom) access has been suspended or limited since 2023, so confirm current availability before booking anything labeled 'JSA'.

Best time. Clear days in spring or autumn — visibility from Dora Observatory into North Korea depends heavily on haze.
