The Miracle on the Han River

In 1953 Korea's income per person was about $67 — within one lifetime it became a top-tier economy.

The "Miracle on the Han River" is Korea's shorthand for one of the fastest economic transformations in modern history. After the Korean War ended in 1953, the country's income per person was around USD 67 — among the poorest in the world — and much of its industry lay in ruins.

From the 1960s, the government pushed export-driven industrialization: first textiles and wigs, then steel, ships, cars, and eventually semiconductors. Entire industrial cities like Ulsan and Pohang were built almost from scratch, and a generation of Koreans worked punishing hours — including miners and nurses sent to Germany and workers sent to Middle East construction sites — to earn foreign currency. The nickname echoes Germany's "Miracle on the Rhine," applied to the river that runs through Seoul.

By 1996 Korea had joined the OECD, the club of advanced economies, and today it is a global leader in chips, cars, ships, and pop culture. This story explains a lot about Korea you'll notice as a visitor: the intense work and education culture, the pride older generations take in what was built, and the speed at which everything — trends, buildings, technology — keeps moving. Grandparents who remember real hunger now live in one of the world's most wired societies.
