Ulsan: Korea's Industrial Capital Built by Hyundai

The world's largest shipyard and its largest single car plant share one city — this is where Korea's 'miracle' was physically built.

Ulsan, on Korea's southeastern coast, is the country's industrial capital: home to the world's largest shipyard, the world's largest single automobile plant, and one of its biggest oil refineries. If you want to understand how a war-ruined country became a manufacturing powerhouse in a single generation, this city is the answer in concrete and steel.

Until the early 1960s, Ulsan was mainly a fishing port surrounded by farmland. In 1962, the government designated it Korea's first planned industrial city under the inaugural Five-Year Economic Development Plan, choosing it for its deep-water harbor. In 1972, Hyundai broke ground on an empty beach at Mipo Bay; by 1983 it had risen to become the world's largest shipbuilder, its yard stretching about 4 km along the coast. Nearby, Hyundai Motor's Ulsan complex grew into the world's largest single auto plant — five factories on one site, capable of producing around 1.5 million vehicles a year, with its own dedicated port.

Today Ulsan is quietly rebalancing. The Taehwagang River, once badly polluted by industry, has been restored and is now Korea's second National Garden, with a famous bamboo grove running through downtown. Watching giant ships take shape across the water from Daewangam Park, you see both faces of the city at once.

If you go가신다면

Getting there. KTX from Seoul Station to Ulsan (Tongdosa) Station in about 2h 10m, then local bus or taxi (~30-40 min) into downtown; alternatively an express bus from Seoul to Ulsan (~4h). Within the city, buses and taxis are the practical options.

Tips. The big factories are working sites, not walk-in attractions — view the shipyards from Daewangam Park or the harbor bridges instead of trying to enter. The night view of the petrochemical complex from Ulsan Bridge Observatory is a local favorite. Combine the bamboo grove (morning) with the coast (sunset) for one full day.

Best time. Spring (April-May) and autumn (October) for comfortable walks along the Taehwagang; clear autumn days give the best harbor views.
