A grove of old pines with trunks twisted and leaning in every direction surrounds three Silla royal mounds at the western foot of Namsan. This is the forest in Bae Bien-U's celebrated pine photographs, and on humid mornings ground fog threads between the trunks just as it does in the prints — no climbing involved, since the grove begins right at the parking area.

Local context

Photographers arrive before sunrise after a rainy night, when mist is most likely; by mid-morning the light flattens and tour groups headed for the valley trail simply walk through without stopping.
