The Jeju 4.3 Incident

Korea's favorite holiday island carries a history that one in ten islanders did not survive.

Jeju is Korea's beloved holiday island, but beneath the beaches and volcanic cones lies one of the most painful chapters of modern Korean history. On April 3, 1948, amid the chaos preceding the division of Korea and the establishment of separate governments, an armed uprising broke out on the island. The government's suppression campaign that followed lasted until 1954 and swept up vast numbers of ordinary villagers. An estimated 25,000 to 30,000 people — roughly one-tenth of Jeju's population at the time — were killed, and many mountain villages were burned. For decades the events could barely be discussed publicly. That changed in 2000, when a special law created a national truth commission. Its official investigation report was published in 2003, and President Roh Moo-hyun issued a formal state apology to the people of Jeju — the first by a sitting president. Today the Jeju 4·3 Peace Park, with its memorial hall and quiet monuments, stands as the island's place of remembrance, and April 3 is marked each year with official ceremonies. Visiting takes half a day and reframes everything else you see on Jeju: the empty 'lost villages,' the stone walls, the deep-rooted resilience of island communities.

If you go가신다면

Getting there. Fly to Jeju (about 1 h from Seoul Gimpo). The Peace Park is in the mid-mountain area of Jeju City: take a city bus from Jeju Bus Terminal toward Bonggae (about 30–40 min) or a 25–30 min taxi ride from downtown Jeju City. Neobeunsungi Memorial Hall in Bukchon-ri is on the coastal bus route east of Jeju City.

Tips. Admission to the Peace Park is free; allow 2–3 hours for the memorial hall's exhibits, which have English captions. Keep voices low — locals visit to mourn family members, and many gravestones mark victims whose remains were never found. If you visit around April 3, expect official memorial ceremonies and larger crowds; join respectfully from the sidelines.

Best time. Early April, when the official memorial period coincides with Jeju's spring; the park's cherry blossoms add a quiet poignancy.
