NadeHwangnyongsa Temple Site 황룡사지

Only the foundation stones remain of Hwangnyongsa, the great Silla temple whose nine-story wooden pagoda — by old accounts around eighty meters tall — burned during the Mongol invasions of the 13th century. What is left is a vast open plain crossed by walking and cycling paths, where the scale of the empty site does the talking. A small history center at the edge shows reconstructions of what once stood here.
Local context
Locals ride through on the bike route linking Bunhwangsa and Woljeonggyo; come in late spring when the green barley around the site is up, or at dusk when the sun drops behind the burial mounds to the west.
