Jeonju Gamaek Alley 전주 가맥거리
Gamaek — short for 'gage maekju,' shop beer — is a Jeonju-born drinking style: downtown corner supermarkets set out plastic tables after dark and serve cold bottled beer with dried pollack grilled over briquette flame. The fish arrives flattened and charred, eaten with a mustard-soy dipping sauce. The shops are scattered through the old-town blocks of Gyeongwon-dong and Jeon-dong rather than gathered on one signed street.
Local context
The ritual is self-serve: take bottles from the shop fridge yourself and settle up by counting empties at the end. Jeonju even holds an annual gamaek festival in summer, which shows how seriously the city takes this.
