Suwon Tongdak Street (Fried Chicken Street) 수원 통닭거리

Suwon, Seoul · 37.2795, 127.0178

A street near Paldalmun Gate lined with dozens of old-school chicken houses, where whole birds are fried in bubbling cauldrons of oil and served chopped with pickled radish and beer. Come hungry in the early evening after walking the fortress wall — one whole tongdak comfortably feeds two — and expect queues at the famous houses on weekends. It sits at the southern end of the Hwaseong loop, a ten-minute walk from Suwon's traditional market cluster.

Local context

Locals split loyalties between the two oldest houses, Yongseong and Jinmi, but insiders say the shorter lines at neighboring shops taste nearly identical. Ordering 'banban' gets you half plain, half sauced, and the fried gizzards that come as a free side are part of the experience, not a mistake.
