Most Koreans know Yeosu by ear before they ever visit: Busker Busker's 2012 ballad "Yeosu Night Sea" turned this southern port's glittering waterfront into a national symbol of romance. Here is the twist first-timers rarely expect — a good share of that famous glow comes not from lighthouses or cafés, but from the Yeosu National Industrial Complex, Korea's largest petrochemical complex, humming around the coastline day and night. Founded in 1967, it accounts for nearly half of the country's petrochemical production capacity, and its tangle of illuminated towers and pipes is officially listed among the "Ten Views of Yeosu." The year 2012 changed everything at once: the city hosted the Yeosu World Expo, KTX trains — launched in late 2011 ahead of the Expo — made it an easy ride from Seoul, and the song came out — annual visitors roughly doubled, from about seven million to fifteen million that year. Today Yeosu wears both faces comfortably. By day you can ride the maritime cable car across the strait and stroll the camellia island of Odongdo; by night, travelers pack the Romantic Pocha Street for grilled seafood and soju while the sea — and the industry that built modern Korea — sparkle in the very same view.
